Workers from across Algeria employed in catering operations at the UK-based transnational Compass held their founding assembly in Algiers at the end of March and have now completed the formalities for official registration of their union.

SNATEA, the Autonomous National Union of Workers at Compass Algeria is the first-ever independent union of catering workers in Algeria and joins the growing number of independent private-sector unions in that country.

The IUF has congratulated the founding union members and pledged its solidarity and support.

In Hassi Messaoud, Algeria, 850 kilometers southeast of Algiers, Eurest Support Services, a subsidiary of Compass Group, subcontracts catering and hospitality services to a score of multinationals like Schlumberger, Halliburton, Repsol, BP, Ciepsa, Burlington. Hundreds of ESS employees live in tents; under desert temperatures, and suffer difficult hygiene and living conditions.
